Welcome to Sword Play!

Welcome to Sword Play Fencing! We’re a small fencing school just getting started in northern Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. Our instruction blends traditional methods and techniques with a modern sensibility. Most importantly, we’re focused on making sure students have a good time at fencing class.

Why Sword Play?

The first clue is in the name. Many fencing schools and clubs are focused intently on competing. That can produce champions, but also often leaves behind many fencers who just want to have a good time. Sword Play offers a place for those fencers, teaching fencing basics in a more mellow, more fun context. Fencers old and young have a chance to play with swords safely, overseen by an experienced expert.

Our classes mix technical drills, fencing games, and bouting together in a way that keeps kids and adults entertained. We’ll also explore the historical roots of fencing, and discover how it developed into the modern sport.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t help you elevate your game and do your best in competition. Classical and competitive approaches are blended to offer a greater depth of technique and options while bouting.

You can find out more about our instructor, Sean Newton, and his experience on our website.
